Christmas Lights at the Zoo?

When most of us think of spending a day at the zoo, we usually associate that with the summer time.  But did you know that the National Zoo in Washington D.C has events and entertainment specifically for the holiday season?

The biggest attraction is ZooLights which are from 5-9 PM every night, now through January 1st (with the exception of Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve).  “More than 500,000 environmentally-friendly LED lights transform the Zoo into a winter wonderland. Lit animal silhouettes, musical light displays, and a garden scene light sculpture make for truly magical sights!”

Perhaps the best way to see the ZooLights is to take a magical ride on the National Zoo Choo-Choo!  “Take a merry tour through the Zoo on the National Zoo Choo-Choo. This trackless train whisks guests all over the Zoo and features gorgeous views of the Zoo’s holiday light displays.”  The cost is $3 per ride.

Another fun event for the kiddos is Zoo Tubing on Lion/Tiger Hill.  “It doesn’t have to be a white holiday season to enjoy your favorite snow games. Lion/Tiger Hill will be a winter wonderland complete with two 150’ long “snow tubing” tracks! Be sure to take the plunge down this magical snowless track.”  The cost is $3 per ride.

One of the best free attractions that will get you in out of the cold is checking out the different animal exhibits.  “Thaw your paws in our exhibit buildings and see our nocturnal critters! The Small Mammal House, Great Ape House, Reptile Discovery Center, and Think Tank will be open every night.”

There are other fun attractions as well including the Gin-grr-bread Contest, a nightly raffle, and the Conservation Carousel where you can ride on your favorite animal on a solar-powered carousel!

And the best part?  Entrance to the Zoo is free!  Gotta love Smithsonian.  For full information, you can visit the zoo’s website here: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/ActivitiesAndEvents/Celebrations/ZooLights/
