Happy 100th Birthday Robert E. Simon!

Robert E. Simon was born on April 10th 1914 in New York City. Â He would go on to become a real estate entrepreneur and eventually become the “RES” in Reston, Virginia. Â Simon founded the community in 1964 and has watched it transform from a master plan to a thriving planned community that perfectly balances city and suburb.
Simon’s primary goal when planning Reston in 1962 was to make a city that ensured “the widest choice of opportunities be made available for the full use of leisure time.” Â I truly believe he accomplished just that, proven by the success of the Reston Town Center and Lake Anne, the network of pools throughout the community, and the extensive biking/running trails.
Reston also celebrates it’s 50th anniversary this year with a large number of events. Â Tonight at 6:00 at the Hyatt Regency in the Reston Town Center, hundreds will gather to celebrate this year’s Best of Reston honorees. Â Simon is the honorary chair of the event which is being put on by Cornerstones and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce. Â Visit the Reston Celebrates website for more information on all of the different events for Simon’s birthday and the 50th Anniversary of Reston.

Part of Simon’s method for living a long and fulfilling life is taking a daily walk around Lake Anne Plaza, where he lives on the 13th floor of Heron House, followed by a daily martini.
