Leesburg in Loudoun County, VA
Leesburg is the county seat of Loudoun County Virginia and has been for over 250 years. Like many of the towns in Loudoun County, Leesburg has transformed from a small, rural piedmont town to a suburban commuter community for employees in the Nation’s Capital. Located at Route 7 and the end of the Dulles Greenway which feeds to the Dulles Toll Road and ultimately to the 495 Beltway, it is an ideal location for commuters to call home. Its close proximity to Dulles International Airport increases the popularity of this community. Leesburg’s historical district has several locations on the National Registry. Along with being close to the Dulles Technology corridor, Leesburg is home to the Federal Aviation Administration’s Washington Air Traffic Control Center. A further draw is the large retail space located on the Leesburg Bypass known as the Leesburg Outlet Mall that attracts shoppers from all over the east coast.
The original people of the Leesburg area were Native Americans. What we refer to as present day Route 15 was a major North/South travel route for many native tribes. In the mid 1700’s European settlers arrived and built large farms and plantations in the area. Leesburg is actually named after Thomas Lee, a leading political figure in Colonial Virginia, not his son Francis “Lightfoot” Lee or Robert E. Lee, his great-nephew. During the Civil War, Leesburg served as a base of operations for Col. John S. Mosby and the town frequently changed hands over the course of the war. Later, Leesburg was home to World War II General George C. Marshall, famous architect of the “Marshall Plan” to rebuild Europe after the war. There are at least 63 historical markers in and around the Leesburg area and many historic sites and landmarks. Today Leesburg is still the center of government and commerce for Loudoun County.
