Purcellville Real Estate

Purcellville in Loudoun County, VA

The town’s name is derived from one of its earliest inhabitants, Valentine Vernon Purcell, who established Purcel’s Store and Post Office sometime after 1804. Purcellville is in the heart of the Loudoun Valley in western Loudoun County approximately 9 miles from Leesburg, VA. With the widening of Route 7 in the late 90’s, the area has seen continued increase of development. Traditionally and agricultural town with reliance on the nearby railroad, Purcellville is now moving toward a suburban single family home community with a historic town center.

After Valentine Purcell established his store and post office in the town, other businesses followed suit.  The first public school opened in 1883 and the village officially adopted the name Purcellville. The town was incorporated by the General Assembly in 1908. Originally a stage coach stop, Purcellville took over Leesburg’s place as the start of the stage route with the extension of the railroad in 1874. The Purcellville Train Station is still standing today and was constructed by the Southern Railway in 1891. The train station now serves as the western end marker of the W & OD Trail. Both Union and Confederate armies passed through Purcellville during the Civil War, but was still known as the main headquarters of operations for Mosby’s Confederacy. The town was pillaged as part of The Burning Raid of 1864 as retribution for Mosby’s association. In 1900 and again in 1914 there were a series of fires that burned the remainder of the town’s original structures.
