Springfield in Loudoun County, VA
Located at the Springfield Interchange, the over half-billion dollar highway project completed in 2007 that brings together I-95, I-395 and I-495 as well as two roads; Commerce St. and Route 644/Old Keene Mill Rd/Franconia Rd., Springfield is another Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, DC. Springfield Mall is the second regional shopping center in Northern Virginia after Tyson’s Corner and has made Springfield a major retail shopping destination. Springfield is divided into 4 sections; Central Springfield, North Springfield, West Springfield and Newington.
Founded in 1847 as a station on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, Springfield was named for the landowner at the time, Henry Daingerfield. There were several Post Offices built over the next few years with the names Moor, Corbett and Garfield, but the name Springfield finally returned to the area in 1910 and has remained. The area experienced tremendous growth from the 1950’s to the 1960’s with the completion of the Henry Shirley Highway (now known as I-95/I-395). Realtor Edward Carr subdivided the area for suburban development due to its close proximity to DC. In 1973, construction began on the Springfield Mall and at its completion in 1975, the area was a well-known retail shopping destination. The addition of the Springfield Metro and Rail Station led to the expansion of high-density housing in the area. There are plans to revamp the Mall so that it will be more like the Reston Town Center, an outdoor shopping center with offices and residences.
